Crane - Slewing

Trade Skills Training offers this ten day course as a regular public course or as an on-site course by arrangement.

The aim of this course is to provide participants, from the mining, manufacturing or construction industries, with the knowledge, skills and understanding to effectively and safely operate a Slewing Crane up to C6 (60 tonne capacity). This allows persons to operate all cranes up to and including the C6 Crane.

In completing the course requirements, participants will also satisfy the requirements of Vehicle Mounted Crane (CV) and Non-Slewing Crane (CN) operation as is required under the conditions of the Worksafe WA National C6 license. CV/CN Crane courses may be completed separately or as a CV/CN package. Contact PTC for details including dates, costs and availability

For companies requiring on-site courses specifically for Cranes of up to C2 (20 tonne), please note that the course content varies form that applying to the C6, only in the area of level of calculations required. The duration, of a C2 course, is the same as for a C6 Crane.

Content of the course the following elements relating to operating a Slewing Crane:

  • Calculate safe working loads of fibre, wire and chain slings in straight, reeved and multi-leg configurations
  • Inspect equipment & identify faulty items
  • Correctly care for & store lifting equipment
  • Inspect crane component parts including sheaves, ropes, drums, hooks and anchorage
  • Assess load mass
  • Conduct pre-operational checks
  • Produce a simple job plan
  • Set up, operation and shut down of crane
  • Demonstrate all signals (hand and whistle)
  • Requirements for multi crane lifting
  • Use of crane charts

Those wishing to participate in this training course will need to be at least 18 years of age, be free of any physical or medical condition that may affect the safe operation of a Crane.

To be successful participants must be able to use the English language to a level that would ensure safe operation in an Australian workplace.

Persons successfully completing the Course will be awarded a Certificate of Attainment in the National Competence Unit "MNMG335A - Conduct slewing crane operations" from the Mining Industry Training Package, MNM05. They will also qualify to apply for the Worksafe WA National License Class C6, CV and CN to operate cranes in a workplace.

This course is available at both PTC in Bentley and our Trade Skills Training Centre in Midland. Some courses may be conducted with segments being presented in both Midland and Bentley. On-site course can also be arranged.
