Dogging And Basic Rigging

Trade Skills Training offers this course as a regularly scheduled public course or by arrangement, on-site.

The aim of this course is to provide participants, from the mining, manufacturing, electrical distribution or construction industries, with the knowledge, skills and understanding to effectively and safely perform Dogging and Basic Rigging work, where staff need to be able to inspect, select and apply slings etc, also direct the crane operator in the movement of the load and to make a decision on what size sling or shackle to use and how to attach it to the load.

Pre-requisite - The pre-requisite for the Dogging (Electrical) Component of the Course is "UEPOPS201A - Comply with OH&S policy and procedures". The content of this unit is incorporated into every course containing Dogging Units.

Content of the course covers the following elements relating to Dogging operations:

  • Occupational Safety & Health
  • Job/ Site Planning & Accident Prevention
  • Fibre Slings (including knots, bends & hitches, whipping & splicing, and understanding natural & synthetic fibres and safe usage)
  • Flexible Steel Wire Rope
  • Chains
  • Factors Effecting Safe Working Load (SWL)
  • Accessories (shackles, eyebolts, inspection)
  • Slinging & Handling Loads
  • Cranes (including outriggers, use of charts, hazards and communications)
  • Load Assessment

Content of the course covers the following elements relating to Basic Rigging operations:

  • Move plant & equipment
  • Erect Steel
  • Work at height
  • Erect and dismantle particular hoists
  • Place precast concrete
  • Erect safety nets and static lines
  • Erect mast climbers
  • Erect perimeter safety screens and shutters
  • Erect cantilevered crane loading platforms

Those wishing to participate in this training course will need to be at least 18 years of age, be free of any physical or medical condition that may affect the safe undertaking of Dogging or Basic Rigging work.

To be successful participants must be able to use the English language to a level that would ensure safe operation in an Australian workplace.

The usual duration for this course, which includes theoretical and practical training and assessment is 6 days, however persons with experience with the equipment may complete the requirements in a shorter period.

Persons successfully completing the Course will be awarded a Certificate of Attainment in the National Competence Unit "MNMG207A - Conduct dogging operations" from the Mining Industry Training Package, MNM05 OR "UEPOPS214A - Perform dogging work" from the Electrical Distribution Training Package. Where the course Unit requires an OH&S Unit as pre-requisite, the relevant Unit will be listed on the Certificate of Attainment in addition to the Dogging Unit. Successful participants will also qualify to apply for the Worksafe WA National License Class DG to carry out Dogging work in a workplace.

This course is available at both PTC in Bentley and our Trade Skills Training Centre in Midland. On-site delivery can also be arranged.
