Elevated Work Platform

Trade Skills Training offers two courses for Elevating Work Platform operation. The first, is a general course for persons with little or no prior experience, utilises the boom type EWP and is conducted over 1 day. The second course, available through on-site arrangements only, is conducted over two days and is designed for persons who require the Metalliferous Mining Training Package Unit "BCGM3001B - Operate from elevating work platform". This Unit requires operators to be taught and be tested in the operation of three types of EWP.

The aim of both courses is to provide participants, from the mining, manufacturing, electrical distribution or construction industries, with the knowledge, skills and understanding to effectively and safely operate an Elevating Work Platform.

Pre-requisite - The pre-requisite for EWP (Electrical) is "UEPOPS201A - Comply with OH&S policy and procedures". The content of this unit is incorporated into every EWP Course.

Content of the course the following elements relating to operating of an Elevating Work Platform:

  • OH&S, Regulations and Duty of Care
  • Conduct all pre-operational checks
  • Produce a simple job plan
  • State precautions to be considered when setting up, operating and shutting down the machine
  • Demonstrate set up, operation and shut down
  • Emergency decent procedures
  • Demonstrate and explain the post operational checks required.

Participants may request that they carry out an emergency decent utilising an Emergency Decent Device (EDD), as required by Western Power Registered Operators, in which case an additional small PTC card is issued.

Those wishing to participate in this training course will need to be at least 18 years of age, be free of any physical or medical condition that may affect the safe operation of an Elevating Work Platform.

To be successful participants must be able to use the English language to a level that would ensure safe operation in an Australian workplace.

Persons successfully completing the Course will be awarded a Certificate of Attainment in the National Competence Unit "UEPOPS217A - Conduct elevating work platform operations" from the Electrical Training Package OR "BCGM3001B - Operate from elevating work platform", which is an imported Unit into the Mining Industry Training Package, MNM05 as well being a Unit from the Construction Industry Training Package. They will also qualify to apply for the Worksafe WA National License Class WP to operate a Elevating Work Platform with a reach over 11 metres in a workplace. If completed the pre-requisite Unit will be also be listed on the Certificate of Attainment.
